St. Nicholas Church

Experience World Heritage: Visit St. Nicholas Church virtually:

360 degree tour

This church, originally built in Romanesque style, was erected between 1185 and 1190, making it the second oldest church in Freiberg. Of the Romanesque building fabric, the towers are essentially still preserved today - although from 1750 the transformation to the current Baroque view took place.

Today, the building with its ornate decoration is used as a concert and conference hall and offers an impressive ambience for a variety of events and exhibitions.

From Romanesque to Baroque

As early as 1200, there was a significant expansion of the church building: the indented choir with a small altar niche (apse) was integrated. However, the last great fire in Freiberg in 1484 almost completely destroyed the Nikolai Church. The old, destroyed choir was rebuilt and the sacristy with its net-ribbed vault was added. In 1630 the west towers were added and in 1750-53 the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style under the direction of Johann Gottlieb Ohndorf and Johann Christoph Knöffel. The high altar by G. Stecher with the altarpiece by C.W.E. Dietrich also dates from this period.

Redevelopment and new orientation

In the 70s of the 20th century, the church was used as a warehouse and prop room for the neighboring theater. In 1992, the extensive renovation began, during which the Romanesque double-tower facade of the original building was preserved. On May 2, 2002, the Nikolai Church was reopened as a concert and conference hall.
