Freiberg in Christmas splendour
Experience Christmas in the Ore Mountains and the mining tradition: Just in time for Advent, the Silver City of Freiberg is transformed into a magical Christmas-winter world with a miners' Christmas market, a festively illuminated old town and a large ice rink in Freiberg's Freudenstein Castle. A pre-Christmas shopping spree in the old town or the Christmas exhibition and concerts in the City and Mining Museum just are just as much a part of it as the last shifts before Christmas underground.
Freiberg Christmas Market: "Original miners´traditions in the Ore Mountain"
... on Freiberg's upper market (Obermarkt) against a historical backdrop with mining charm: almost 100 festively lit and miner-decorated stalls offer Christmas treats as well as typical Ore Mountin Christmas decorations such as smoking men, candle arches, pyramids, miner and angel figurines and much more.
Opening on Tuesday before the 1st Advent and open until 22 December.

Miners´ parade in torchlight
The miners' customs come alive when the Historical Miners´ and smelters´ guilde (Historische Freiberger Berg- und Hüttenknappschaft) marches majestically in torchlight through the old town and across Freiberg's Christmas Market.

Christmas oratorio (Weihnachtsoratorium) in St. Mary's Cathedral
Advent is also celebrated in St. Mary's Cathedral. The famous Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach (Cantata 1 - 3) will be heard in Freiberg Cathedral with its fantastic acoustics.

Ice rink in Freudenstein Castle
A magical winter world with a large ice rink, rustic mulled wine huts and heated winter bar with restaurant invites you to ice skate or curling in the historic castle courtyard every winter.

Music on the Silbermann organs
One of the most beautiful hall churches characterises the image of the city of Freiberg. With its unique sound, the great Silbermann organ attracts not only music lovers but also organists from all over the world to Freiberg, to St. Mary's Cathedral. This most famous Silbermann organ in the cathedral can be enjoyed as part of the seranades (Abendmusiken) organ concert series.

The most important organ and music festival in Central Germany - in honour of the important organ builder Gottfried Silbermann (1683-1753). International stars of organ music and top ensembles make the region around Dresden, at the foot of the Ore Mountains, resound and attract visitors from all over the world.

Mining customs at Central Saxony's largest folk festival for young and old - celebrate with us!
Bergstadtfest
Central Saxony's largest folk festival invites you to celebrate, discover and enjoy the historic old town for four days with numerous stages and worlds of experience. Well-known top acts, pop and folk music stars, as well as Dixieland and jazz musicians create a great atmosphere - between the Ferris wheel and roller coaster, wine village and beer village. Detailed historical market stalls with craftsmen, shopkeepers, jugglers and minstrels will transport you back to medieval Freiberg. Children can let off steam with fairy tales and puzzles, paper-making and archery in the children's and family world. Other highlights include the election of the Silver City Queen and the closing fireworks display.

Great traditional miners' parade
On the Sunday of the Bergstadtfest, around 30 miners' guilds and 6 miners' bands from all over Germany will take part in the large traditional miners' parade. Around 1,000 participants march in their colourful uniforms through the narrow streets of the old town to the "Meeting of miners´" (bergmännische Aufwartung) on the Upper Market (Obermarkt) (approx. 12 noon) after the mining service in St. Mary's Cathedral (9.30 am).
