Cathedral of St. Mary with Silbermann Organs

The cathedral of St. Mary is the most important medieval sacral building of Freiberg, the silver and Silbermann city's landmark and the centre of lived faith for the evangelical congregation. Built in 1180 as a romanesque basilica the cathedral is a cultural monument nowadays. Since the beginning of the 16th century the late-gothic building defines the skyline of the city of Freiberg.

The "Golden Gate"

The "Golden Gate" is a true celebrity: a late-Romanesque arched sandstone portal created in 1230 with sculptures and ornate columns on the south side. Inside the freestanding "Tulip Pulpit" dating back to the beginning of the 16th century – and the "Bergmann Pulpit", from the year 1638. Both are evidences for the depth of faith and artistry.

Silbermanns Organs

Music lovers will be very excited about the great organ by Gottfried Silbermann. It has 3 manuals, 44 stops, 2,574 pipes and was built from 1711 – 1714 by Gottfried Silbermann. Opposite this is a second, the small Silbermann organ with 14 stops.

Funerary chapel

During a guided tour you can visit the newly restored electoral tomb of the Wettins including the Moritz monument (1563) and the music playing angels (1592/94) with Original Renaissance instruments.

Bells

The ringing of the cathedral bells is also very harmonious. It consists of six bells. Four of them are from the famous Oswald Hilliger foundry in Freiberg.

Themed Tours

This most beautiful vaulted church defines the skyline of the city of Freiberg. The external simplicity of the Cathedral forms a stark contrast to the richly decorated interior. The religious artworks of different eras draw tens of thousands of art- and organ music-lovers to the Cathedral every year. Themed Tours are offered in addition to the well established Cathedral Tours, to, for example,

  • the Silbermann organ,
  • the pulpits (Tulip Pulpit and Bergmann Pulpit)
  • the Romanesque "Golden Gate"
  • the roof framework with bells
  • or to the cloister with funerary chapel of the noble family von Schönberg

Marvel at the newly restored electoral tomb of the Wettins, also on a new special tour. This burial place of the Wettins is once again accessible after years of restoration. Its Renaissance design is truly one of a kind. In addition to a tour to the attractions of the cathedral, topic-specific information and interesting stories can be expected.
